Orthodontics is the study of treatment and prevention of teeth and bite irregularities.
Dentofacial Orthopedics is the study of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and abnormalities of the head, neck and jaw musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves).
The synergy of these two disciplines produces dramatically more beautiful smiles, longer-lasting dental health and an overall greater quality of life by addressing orthodontic and orthopedic issues in patients of all ages. Since these problems can stem from either genetic or environmental factors alone or a combination of the two, early and proper diagnosis through photographs, x-rays and dental impressions is essential before beginning treatment. This early diligence allows our practice to make a more informed treatment recommendation.
We can begin correction of the alignment of the face with the upper and lower jaw bones beginning with dentofacial orthopedic treatment as a foundation. This methodology for avoiding future jaw surgeries ordinarily lasts 6-18 months in most cases, but age and the orthopedic problem severity can shift the timetable from one case to another.
A phase of orthodontic treatment lasting 12-18 months can correct irregularities in teeth alignment after completing initial dentofacial orthopedic treatment.
Dr. Anil Rick Soordhar and Dr. Sunil Vick Soordhar provide Orthodontic and Dentofacial Orthopedic Treatment for adults, adolescents and children.
An orthodontic (teeth) and dentofacial orthopedic (face and jaw bone) evaluation should take place at age 3 to 6 for all children. This early evaluation can help to determine the best time to begin any necessary treatment. Treating children early during their growth stages allows us to achieve results that may not be possible when face and jaw bones have fully developed. This early treatment can simplify or eliminate additional treatment for the child and potential future surgeries. Orthodontic treatment for teens and adults can be started at anytime.
